New Zealand Viewers Desert Weakest Link

The Weakest Link - which screens at 7.30pm on Tuesdays in NZ- attracted an impressive 647,500 viewers on its July 17 debut on TV One. But that dropped to 630,300 viewers the following week, 570,000 in the third and 537,600 last week. Sowry said those figures were "quite acceptable", particularly because it was up against stronger-rating TV2 shows Strip Search and Choppers. He said apart from the slip in the third week, TV One was happy with its ratings. Screening Tuesday nights, The Weakest Link is modelled on the popular British quiz show and promoted here as a "quiz show with bite". Nine contestants battle each other, the clock and the host in a general knowledge contest but the New Zealand model has proved fodder for critics.

One newspaper reviewer said host Louise Wallace came across as a "bloodless character, like one of those girl scientists from an early Dr Who episode". Keats believes people will warm to The Weakest Link. He said ratings for the first couple of weeks were not too bad and it was rating just below where Money Doctor had rated in the same slot beforehand. "If that continues, it's obviously a bit of a drop, but it's not a disaster and not a clear trend down," said Keats. "It's probably a pattern where people need to warm to. I wouldn't write it off just yet."
