Q:
The banter between yourself and Anne on the show was fantastic - did you
feel you were over stepping the mark with your comments? At one point
you said of another contestant that "I've stepped on bugs with more brains
than her."
A: Actually, the thought never came to mind. I went into automatic comic
mode. There was a lot more exchange between Anne and I as well as the
other team members. Most of it ended up on the cutting room floor. Also,
there was a great deal of clip shuffling and editing that were taken out
of sequence. It doesn't matter if the response or expression you saw was
the actual one made in the sequence it was taped. NBC used the most interesting
sounds bites and video clips to make the show as exciting as possible.
You have to keep in mind that they are taking a 4 hour taping session
and cramming it into 45 minutes of show. The only part of the game that
remains uncut is the actual "timed" game play.
Q: How did you feel, as an American and how did
the American public on the whole feel about this little known British
woman coming over and insulting your country men?
A: NBC actually did a really great job with pre-publicity on TWL. There
were lots of strange commercials where all you heard about the show was
Anne's voice saying "You ARE the weakest link! GOODBYE!" It raised enough
interest that TWL had a very good debut. As far as the rest of America…
I'm sure it's just like in the UK. You either love her or hate her. No
one is forcing you to watch the show. I was hooked from the start. I think
Anne is great!
Q: Do Americans think that all British people are
like Anne?!
A: Of course not. But then again, every country has their share of stupid
people. Ha ha.
Q: You commented on the British and dentistry -
did you, as Anne said think up that one on the way or was it totally unplanned?
A: "You are the best thing to happen to the British since they discovered
cosmetic dentistry". That was actually a line I used when I would talk
about TWL. It ended up coming out because Anne started blasting me about
my name. So I "Zinged" her with it. I got a small smile out of her for
that one. I think she realized she had a worthy opponent. I have British
friends here in the US. They thought it was a hilarious line. It's all
for entertainment, so I hope you don't hate me there in the UK. really
like to come and visit someday.
